The region was home to advanced indigenous cultures, such as the Inca and the Quitu-Cara, long before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. Ecuador became part of the Spanish Empire and remained under Spanish rule for nearly three centuries until it gained independence in 1822. The country experienced periods of political instability, including dictatorships and border disputes, throughout the 20th century. Today, Ecuador is a democratic republic that values its indigenous heritage and works towards economic and social development. The country's historical sites, such as the Inca ruins of Ingapirca and the colonial center of Quito, are testament to its fascinating past.
